[edit] About

The Shinto goddess of the sun and ruler of the plain of Heaven, Amaterasu's name means 'shining heaven'. She is considered one of the central deities in the Shinto pantheon and it is said that the Japanese Imperial family are her descendants. She is the eldest of the three deities born from Izanagi during the cleansing rite after his return from Yomi, the underworld. She was born from the cleansing of his left eye, and her form was so bright and radiant that shw was sent up into heaven, where she has ruled ever since. She is also noted as the creator of rice fields and weaving, and taught mankind how to cultivate wheat and silkworms.

The most famous tale of Amaterasu involves her relationship with her brother, Susanoo, the story of which varies from text to text. One version says that when Susanoo was ordered to leave Heaven by Izanagi for his obstinate behavior, he visited Amaterasu to bid her farewell. While he was there, she proposed a challenge. They were each to turn an object of the other's into humans, and the one with the most people would win. While Amaterasu created four women from Susanoo's sword, he created five men from her necklace. Amaterasu claimed that as the necklace was hers, as were the five men, and proclaimed herself the winner. Infuriated by her trickery Susanoo burned her rice fields, hurled a flaming pony at her loom, and killed one of her attendants. Struck by fear and grief, Amaterasu hid herself inside the cave Ama-no-Iwato, closing the entrance with a large boulder and plunging the world into darkness. Deprived of both light and life, the world became barren and ruled by demons, so the other gods tried everything within their power to lure her back out into the open. Their attemps were met with little success until the goddess Uzume began to dance. Her comical and obscene dance caused the other gods to roar with laughter, arousing Amaterasu's curiosity. When she emerged from the cave she caught a glimse of her own reflection in a mirror that Uzume had hung on a tree, and when she drew closer to it for a better look the other gods grabbed her and prevented her from returning to the cave. She then returned to the sky and light was returned to the world.

Later she would send her grandson, Ninigi-no-Mikoto to Earth to plant rice, and would eventually send him to pacify a warring Japan by uniting it under a single rule. From this is born the belief that the Imperial family are all descendants of Amaterasu herself.

  • General

Some theologists and mythologists suggest that Amaterasu might actually be a male god, however in the Megaten series as a whole, Amaterasu is depicted as female. The only exceptions to this are Nocturne and IMAGINE, where the wireframe modal shares a great resemblance to the other Amatsu male deities.
