[edit] About

In Greek mythology, the Chimera was a hodgepodge of various animals and was one of the offspring produced by Typhon and Echidna. Among her many siblings were such beasts as Cerberus, the Hydra, and Orthros. She is described as an agile and strong beast with one head of a lion, a second of a dragon, a goat's head in her middle, and a serpent for her tail. She was also able to breath a steam of fire as hot as that of a furnace to burn up any who should try and slay her, although it is argued in depiction which of her heads actually broth fire. It should be noted that the Chimera is widely believed to be a female monster, despite the fact that her lion's head typically includes a mane, which is only seen on male lions.

The Chimera lived in Lycia where many had tried to slay her, however none had ever succeeded and only met their death. When King Iobates was told by King Proetus to kill Bellerophon, Iobates feared the wrath of the gods should he kill a guest. Iobates decided therefor to send Bellerophon out to slay the Chimera, a task he assumed was impossible.

When the goddess Athena heard what Iobates had asked of Bellerophon, she realised he would surely die should he go alone, and so sent him aid in the form of the winged horse, Pegasus. Bellerophon was thankful for this gift, mounted Pegasus, and flew off to where the Chimera was said to reside. However even while riding on the back of Pegasus he could not get near enough to the ferocious beast to land a single blow because of its fearsome fiery breath. Feeling the heat from the Chimera's breath, Bellerophon came up with an ingenious plan. He mounted a lump of lead on the end of a long spear, then charged at the Chimera head on and once the lead was in the Chimera's mouth, he quickly pulled away to a safe distance. The lead became stuck in the Chimera's throat, where the heat from her breath melted it, and the beast suffocated to death.

Bellerophon returned to King Iobates victorious, and Iobates was so impressed by his heroic actions that he refused to believe such a man should be put to death. Instead he allowed him to marry his daughter Antea.
