[edit] About

Horus is a chief deity who is known to be one of the oldest gods of Ancient Egyptian religion. He is typically depicted as a falcon or as a man with the head of a falcon and chiefly represents the sky and sun.

During early mythology Horus was the son of Hathor and god of the sky, his name literally meaning 'high'. He was depicted as a great felcon with outstretched wings. As time moved on, he became associated with the sun, and it was believed that his right eye was the sun and his left eye was the moon. It was during a battle with his uncle Set that Horus damaged his left eye, and this is why the moon is not as bright as the sun.

Later still Horus would become identified with Ra, another chief Egyptian sun god, and much confusion was born over the relations of the two being. Sometimes Horus would be called the son of Ra, others he would be explained as Ra himself. Eventually it was come to believe that Horus was the child of Osiris and Isis, born when Isis had sexual intercourse with Osiris' body after he was killed by Set.

Horus' association with the moon dwindled as he become more and more associated with the sun, although the controversy with his origins would continue. Eventually it was suggested that he was the husband of Isis and the reincarnation of Osiris, making him his own father, a concept not as disturbing to the Greeks as it was to the Egyptians.
