In Hindu mythology, Lakshmi (or Laksmi) is the goddess of love, beauty, good fortune, wealth, fertility and the lotus flower. She is the consort of Vishnu and went on to marry or romance his Earthly incarnations such as Rama as Sita and Krishna as Rukmini.
When the sage Durvasa presented a garland of flowers that could never wilt to the king of devas, Indra he gave it to his mount Airavata. Durvasa was a short-tempered man, and when he saw Airavata trampling his divine gift he became enraged and cursed Indra and the other devas for the disrespect. The curse caused all the devas to lose their powers, so they were quickly vanquished by the asura and forced from heaven.
Indra and the other devas turned for help from Brahma who told them to churn the ocean of milk and obtain the elixir of immortality. To aid them, Vishnu took the form of a great tortoise to act as a churning rod while the naga Vasuki agreed to become the churning rope.
From the ocean of milk were born many divine gifts, one of which was the goddess Lakshmi. She soon chose Lord Vishnu as her consort for his ability to control illusion. Because of this she is considered the sister of Alakshmi, goddess of misfortune, as they were both born from the ocean of milk.
According to the Vishnu Purana however, she is the daughter of Bhrigu and Khyaati and lived in Swarga until Durvasa's curse forced her to leave. Her reappearance and marriage to Vishnu thereafter, remains the same.
