Okuninushi is a divinity in Japanese Shinto teachings. When Okuninushi and his eighty brothers were competing for the hand of Princess Yakami in marriage, a god appeared as a flayed hare to each of them to test their kindness. Each of the brothers told the hare to bathe in the sea and dry in the wind, causing much pain, but Okuninushi told it to bathe in fresh water and roll in pollen, soothing its pain. Pleased, the god revealed its true form, and promised that Okuninushi would marry Yakami. When his brothers discovered this, they were mad with jealousy, and burned Okuninushi to death. His mother, Kami-Musubi, revived him, but once again his brothers attacked him, crushing Okuninushi to death. Kami-Musubi then advised that he should seek sanctuary in the underworld where his brothers could not find him.
While in the underworld, Okuninushi met with Susanoo and his daughter Suseri-Hime, who he fell instantly in love with. Susanoo, thinking Okuninushi weak and thus an unbefitting husband for his daughter, set about bringing an end to him. Okuninushi survived a night in a room full of snakes and a second night in a room full of wasps and poisonous centipedes, thanks to a magic scarf Suseri-Hime had given him, and so Susanoo proposed a trial. He shot an arrow into the middle of an enormous meadow, and told Okuninushi to fetch it. Once he had reached the center of the meadow, Susanoo set it ablaze. However, thanks to the help of a field mouse, Okuninushi found a place to hide and the arrow. Susanoo was deeply impressed.
After so many attempts at his life, and not knowing that Susanoo's feelings were changing, Okuninushi and Suseri-Hime decided to elope. Okuninushi tied Susanoo's hair to the rafters of the palace , and when Susanoo relised they were escaping, jumped up, pulling his palace down on top of him and slowing him down. Despite this, Susanoo caught up with the two lovers just as they reached the borders of the underworld. Unexpectedly, Susanoo was not enraged, and instead gave Okuninushi some of his weapons, and advised that he defeat all his brothers. Okuninushi and Suseri-Hime were married with Susanoo's consent, and from his new palace at Mount Uka, was able to defeat his brothers, and became the ruler of the entire Izumo Province.
A long time later, when the sun goddess Amaterasu decided to unite the land, Okuninushi and his sons defended their land against her grandson, Ninigi. Despite their most valiant efforts, they were no match for the powers of the higher deities, and submitted. Seeing Okuninushi was a good man, Amaterasu compensated him by making him ruler of the world of spirits, and god of farming, business, agriculture, and medicine.
