[edit] About

Dakshayani, also known as Sati, was the daughter of Daksha in Hindu mythology. Daksha tended to be very protective of his daughters and when Sati and Shiva wanted to be married he was staunchly opposed, and to punish her he refused to invite Shiva to a festival and mocked him openly. In grief, Sati immolated herself and burned to death. Shiva went mad with rage and created two ferocious goblins that attacked and killed all at the festival, Daksha himself being decapitated. After calming down, Shiva returned all those slain to life, and replaced Daksha's head with that of a goat. Having learned his lesson, Daksha devoted his life to Shiva. Later, Sati was reincarnated as Parvati, and married Shiva.

[edit] Real World Practice

The legend of Sati's reincarnation may have been the origin of the belief in India that after a woman's husband passes on, that taking her own life would allow them to be reincarnated together and remarry in their next life, as such practice is a proof of their loyalty and monuments were erected to praise those faithful widows. In 1829, the Bengal Presidency established a law to ban such suicidal acts, and soon followed by other neighbor territories.
