About
Scathach is a Celtic warrior maiden and martial arts teacher from the Isle of Skye in Scotland who is famous for training the legendary Irish warrior Cu Chulainn in the arts of combat.
In the tale of "Tochmarc Emire" Cu Chulainn fell in love with the beautiful Emer, but her father Forgall forbid their marriage until Cu Chulainn had completed his training as a warrior. Cu Chulainn and his good friend Ferdiad travel to the fortress of shadows, Dun Scaith where Scathach taught them geat feats of arms and other incredible skills, then gave Cu Chulainn his famous and powerful spear, Gae Bulg.
During his training, Cu Chulainn had an affair with Scathach's daughter Uathach, but broke her fingers by accident. When her lover Cochar Croibhe heard her scream in pain, he burst into the room to find the two together, and challenged Cu Chulainn to a duel. Cu Chulainn defeated him with great ease, and to make it up to Scathach and her daughter, agreed to become Uathach's lover. Scathach agreed to allow the two to marry without requiring the traditional bridal price. Then, when Cu Chulainn's training was almost complete, Scathach also slept with him.
When Scathach's arch rival, the warrior maiden Aife, attacked her fortress, she sent out Cu Chulainn to fight with her. He defeated Aife in combat and forced her to make peace with Scathach, ending their rivalry.
