The unicorn is a beast that first appeared in Greek natural history rather than mythology, and was said to be native to the still largly unexplored regions of India. It is usually described as either an ass, goat, or horse that is pure white in colour, its feet cloven like those of a goat, sometimes with the tail of a lion, and most importantly it had one large horn growing upon its forehead. The unicorn is considered to be an animal that is pure of heart but has a wild and untamed nature, as such it will avoid any human with the exception of virgin females, which were often used as a means to trap them.

The unicorn's horn was once prized by hunters in medieval times for its ability to cure any poison and purify water, and would thus carry a heavy price. As such many underhanded means were used to capture them, the most successful being the use of a virgin maiden, as it was said that a unicorn would forget its wild nature and approach such a maiden in a tame and relaxed manour.

In Chinese mythology there are five creatures that are sometimes refered to as "the five Chinese unicorns", these are Qilin, Xie Zhi, Ki Lin, Xie Niu and Bai Ze. The most prominant features that links these beasts is their holy nature and the singular horn on their heads, however they would differ vastly in appearance.
