  • Zhu Que (Mandarin), Suzaku (Japanese): 朱雀

[edit] About

Zhu-Que is one of the four Chinese celestial beasts according to the Taoist five-elemental system, Wu Xing and is alternatively knows as the Vermilion Bird of the South. It represents the direction south, the element of fire and the summer season.

Zhu-Que is often depicted as a phoenix with brilliant red feathers like that of flame, and for this is often confused with Feng Huang, the Chinese ruler of birds.

Due to the fact that the phoenix is said to represent utmost beauty and grace, its image is sewn onto the robes of the empress (bride to the emperor of China).

[edit] Feng Huang, Zhu-Que, and the Phoenix

In many instances the Zhu-Que has been mistranslated as Feng Huang, Chinese ruler of the Avian race, or as the Phoenix, the Egyptian bird of rebirth. It carries no connection to these two birds other than a few characteristics.

[edit] In game

In Digital Devil Saga, Zhu-Que is a powerful member of the mysterious band of rookies who have formed a small tribe and are searching for Serph to destroy the Embryon. She has no personal interest in reaching Nirvana and got defeated anyway.

In Persona 3, fusing the four Holy beasts via Cross spread will result in Kohryu. Suzaku's elemental affinities also changed from Electricity to Fire in FES.
