It's basically like any other Miyazaki project, only better. The graphic novels take the story a lot farther than the movie. Basically, it's about a post-apocalyptic world in which insects have grown to immense size and the world is slowly being overtaken by a forest of fungi. The spores of this forest, called the miasma, is deadly to man, but the insects can survive within it. Nausicaa is a princess of the Valley of Wind, a small kingdom near the the forest, and she eventually is drawn into a conflict between two greater powers in the dying world. When one of these powers proves capable of reviving the very weapon that led the world to its current state in the process, Nausicaa finds herself in the center of the conflict, a far cry away from the small role she played as a princess in a minuscule country. An important figure in the story is the Ohmu, which is like the king of the insects--they represent a lot of things, I think namely the duality of nature in its relationship with mankind. Basically, you just need to encounter it in some form rather than hear about it in such an abbreviated form. It has been like... 8 years since I read them.
