I think the recently implemented Newbie / Less Newbie thing is a brilliant step in the right direction. The best way to judge if a login is owned by a spambot or not is to let them post and then judge the results, but making them post to an existing thread minimizes the damage... also, if you discover they're a spammer, you could (I'm just suggesting) set up a script to delete not only the account, but also, their posts, perhaps leaving just a placeholder and maybe statistical info for improving the spambot filter (although the latter would be harder due to their tendency to create statistics-warping random text, but a fuzzy spellcheck could filter those out, I guess). Anyhow, they seem to be targeting every online forum, not just this one, so maybe there's some sorta society against them by now like how there is with blacklists and whitelists for email spam.
